HANDS AND FEET TOUCHING THE CITY

Walking between Alterations and hardware store yesterday, the long way.

I was remembering something we’d been told recently at work– that if you walk around the shop and touch everything, you’re more likely to notice if it is out of place or untidy. I spontaneously tested out this relationship between intentionally touching things and becoming more aware of them.

Things I touched:
A knobbly tree trunk
             Asphalt
A hairy palm
The metal cage around a tree
A tiled wall
             Bumpy yellow rubber
Concrete
A pedestrian crossing button
(a cigarette butt rolls past in the wind)
            Over a curb
            And yellow lines
A traffic light pole
            Red and some beige bricks
2 spiky iron fences
A stone sculpture
3 stakes holding up trees
A street sign
A utility box
An advertising light box
            A concrete manhole
A street sign
A parking meter
A utility box
A pole
3 street signs
             Blue plastic thing
A parking meter
3 street signs
             Bumpy yellow rubber
Over a curb
Following a white line
2 street signs
A sandwich board
            Some small square white tiles
(a pigeon)
A parking meter
A short pole
            Concrete
A short pole
            Over curb
            Across yellow line
            Asphalt road surface
            Zigzag red bricks
A knobbly barked tree
A street sign
(follow another pigeon)
            Concrete
            Round light in the ground
A witch’s hat
A bike stand
A poster stand
            Zebra crossing
A pedestrian crossing button
            Yellow bumpy dots
